Toyota Makes a Comeback at Detroit Auto Show

Toyota has been hit hard over the past couple of years with natural disasters in Japan, where its headquarters are located, and by its falling market share here in the U.S. However, the Japanese auto manufacturer hopes that the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, which runs throughout a large part of the month of January, will be its starting point for a comeback. Though the company has faced some serious setbacks, it plans to include…

2012 Toyota Tacoma TRD T/X Baja Series

Ford took everyone by surprised when it unveiled the F-150 SVT Raptor back in 2008, not only with the truck's capability but by the fact that they had the guts to produce it at all. The success of the Raptor left other automakers scrambling to produce something similar, although everything yet has fallen short in one way or another. Chrysler unveiled the Ram Runner Concept at SEMA last year, although you have to build it yourself if you want one, and GM has merely teased the idea of producing the Sierra All Terrain HD Concept shown earlier this year.

Now, Toyota is stepping up to the plate with the Tacoma TRD T|X Baja Series. Unveiled today at the Texas State Fair, this limited-edition truck takes inspiration from Toyota's Baja racing history and features items like an electronically-controlled locking differential, TRD off-road package with Bilstein race shocks and an increased ride height of two inches, BF Goodrich T/A KO tires and bead-lock style wheels. Power comes from Toyota's 4.0-liter V6 and both a six-speed manual or five-speed automatic transmission are available.

The TRD T|X Baja Series also benefits from changes made to the standard Tacoma for 2012, including a restyled front end with a new hood, grille, front bumper and headlights. The interior gets a new instrument panel, updated gauges, new steering wheel and more. You can read full details about both the standard Tacoma and the limited edition Baja Series in the press release after the jump.

Toyota Prius ad people person

In the latest Prius family commercial by Toyota, actual actors, loads of computer animation and a miniature set combine to create the illusion of a Godzilla-sized man made of people. He then steps out of his house to find that his Toyota Prius has morphed into four vehicles: a regular Prius, Prius V, Prius C concept and Prius Plug-In. This is the end of Mr. People Person, as he quickly disintegrates, leaving only his size-bazillion shoes and a bunch of little people behind.

Toyota's narrative behind its Prius People Person ad states:
Not long ago, there was one model of Prius for everyone to share. But now that one Prius has become a family: There's one for everyone. There's the original one, the bigger one, the smaller one and the one that plugs in. They're all a little different, just like us.
We'd say the spot makes sense conceptually, but it's a bit over the top, and creepy to boot. See it for yourself after the jump and let the disintegration begin.

Wim Delvoye Tire Carving

It's a good thing we aren't fabulously wealthy, otherwise our domiciles would be clad in all sorts of clever automotive art. We're not just talking cheesy vinyl bench-seat sofas and engine-block coffee tables, either. We like to think our taste elevates above some of the more common automotive décor we've seen. Take Wim Delvoye's intricate tire carvings, for example. Each piece is filled with exquisite detail and is hand carved. Untold hours have been sunk into each piece (we have to imagine that this isn't the type of thing that gets churned out in an afternoon - or a week of afternoons, for that matter).

The only question, is how does one go about displaying a decorative carved tire in one's home? Would it work as a stylish table center piece? How about hanging from the ceiling? We say let experimentation be your guide.

Judging by the gallery names on Delvoye's site, these carved tires might actually be a few years old, but this is the first time we've seen them. If they're new to you as well, check out our full gallery, then visit Delvoye's website by clicking on the link below.

toyota EV at nurburgring

Toyota's TMG EV P001 - perhaps trying to outrun its boring name - smashed the existing lap record for an electric vehicle on the famed 12.93-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife track with a time of seven minutes, 47.79 seconds. This beats the previous electric car time by a healthy margin and puts Toyota's electric racer on par with the lap times recorded by vehicles like the Nissan GT-R and Porsche 911 Turbo, but is still a ways off the any-powertrain-goes record of 6:48. The just-bested EV record was set by Peugeot's EX1 earlier this year at 9.01:33 (watch a video of that run here). The EX1 averaged a rather impressive 85.9 miles per hour on the grueling track. Prior to the EX1's blazing run, a modified Mini E held the electric vehicle record at the Nürburgring with a time of 9 minutes 51 seconds.

The new record, comfortably under Toyota's pre-attempt target of eight minutes, should help TMG sell the heart of the EV P001 when commercial sales start next year. The powertrain includes components from Rational Motion and EVO Electric. We should also see at least some sort of improvement in Toyota's other electric vehicle offerings, since Pascal Vasselon, TMG's Technical Director, said in a statement, "We also wanted to learn more about the operation of our electric powertrain in extreme circumstances... We have enhanced our electric powertrain development thanks to the information our engineers have gained and our future EV products will benefit from this project."

Given the rapid advancements in electric vehicle technology, we'd assume that Toyota's record will be challenged in the near future, but we don't expect Toyota to give up its spot without a fight. There's video of Toyota's electrifying Nurburgring run after the jump.
