The Toyota Prius has an impressive reputation for its hybrid electric performance. Now, Toyota is challenging the status quo with the introduction of the 2017 Prius Prime -- scheduled to arrive later this year. The Japanese automaker is calling the introduction the "next exciting chapter in the hybrid story." Boasting a futuristic interior complete with an infotainment system and a four-seat layout the fourth-generation Prius also equips a host of active safety features for added confidence.

The new Prius model is outfitted with essentially the same powertrain as the current Prius, but this time it equips a larger lithium-ion battery pack -- 8.8 kWh to be exact. Toyota projects that this will allow for an all-electric range of 22 miles. Toyota also projects that the Prius Prime will get 52 mpg combined and 600 miles of range when the battery is fully charged and the tank is full.
