Bel Air is located in Harford County. Originally named "Scott's Old Fields", the name was changed by county commissioners to the more appealing "Belle Aire". The name has since gone through numerous changes, first to "Bell Aire" and then in 1798 it was transformed to its current name Bel Air. Harford's county seat is located in Bel Air on Main Street. The Ma and Pa walking trail is what remains of the mid-20th century Maryland and Pennsylvania Railroad that ran through town. Bel Air and its surrounding suburbs have grown substantially since 1980 and today is the center for medical, educational, governmental, commercial, and cultural institutions in the county.
